UNDER THE CARPET

This lighting installation was a group project that was part master program at KTH. It was done for the Nynäshamn Culture Festival 2013 in a two-storey parking house located in the centre of Nynäshamn at one corner of the Main Square.

The idea of my group was creating a colored lighting installation where the audience could feel that the building was calling them to go around and through the place and discover what was inside of the it. The lighting concept was based on: defining edges, color contrast and to try to reach the idea that "an inner force lift the ground and hide things in it”.

The definition of the building edges was really important, because

during our first observations we realized that the dimensions and shape of the building was hard to read during nightime. To solve this problem we illuminated the background of the building and also iluminated some building edges and the closest upper corner of the building to the main square.

We illuminated just the corner where the floor supposed to be lifted to "hide the things under the carpet" or in our case "hide the cars inside of the building". We didn't iluminated all the corners or edges of the building because we wanted to captch the attention of the people only in the specific place where we did it, and just by doing that we keep our concept idea. To create the background lighting we lighted up some trees that were located behind the building with yellowish light and we used whitish light to make more clear the building silhouette.

By sending light out though the buildings openings, we represent the “inner force”. For this part of the installation, we used yellowish light.

The metalic stairscase was a strong vertical element, because it was what maintain conected both levels when the floor was “virtually lifted”; it should contrast the background and buildings openings but relate to the elements that shown the outlining of the building. Due to this, we used a blue light on the stairs, contrasting the yellowish light used in the other parts.
