NILSA SARMIENTO
Architect and Lighting Designer
NYSTART
This lighting installation was created in 2016 for a Lighting Festival called "Allt Ljus på Uppsala", organized by Uppsala Kommun. It was an outdoor lighting project, which was located in the Linnaeus Garden.
It represented an analogy between our lifes and the moment that every plant pass after every winter time, in other words, the lighting installation wanted to show that "there is nothing impossible when there is desire" and that we can reach our goals even when we have failures.
In it, I used darkness to represent the past and the light to represent the success or ”fresh start”.
The installation was divided in different areas and all of them together gave the meaning to it. From all the areas, the most important part was the lighting sculpture located between the trees of the garden main entrance.

”Life is hard but never impossible… there are always possibilities, you only need to find them... Life is a daily competition but even so you should never give up. You should always do your best, enjoy every moment, be consistent and use your best resources. That is the only way to stand up when you fall and be able to reach your goals”.
The idea was represented by light as follow:
-
The phosphorescence of the stones in the path to the Orangeriet represents possibilities
-
Color and lighting effects in the sculpture represent competition.
-
The diversity of heights of the elements of the sculpture means how chaotic can be life but the increasing heights represent that there is always a solution to every problem in front of us, we just need to look carefully.
-
The interaction with the sculpture represent the importance of enjoy the moment.
-
The consistent of the color of the background building represent the perseverance.
Everything was carefully planned and installed. For the sculpture I used acrylic with 2 different finishes: diffuse and clear acrylic; dichroic glass foile, LED strips, LED tiles and a motion sensor.
An UV lamp were used from time to time in the path to the orangeriet to keep charged the stones that were on the floor late at night.
LED linear luminaires were used in the facade ligting and LED circular luminaires were used in the tree lighting.
Stockholm Lighting AB, Spandex AB, Akriform Plast AB sponsored part of the installation while Scenteknik AB and Uppsala Kommun collaborated with the installation and transport.
